In his life, the writer has met with many renowned musicians. Whenever queried by the writer, some of them said, music is created spontaneously and depends on the degree of one’s sensitivity. To some, composing music requires profound knowledge of music as well as the `chord' section. According to others, music is a collage item. Not totally satisfied by their answers, he himself tries to find it out in his article. He was of the view that before giving music, every Bengali musician must have a sound understanding of the works of Rabindranath Tagore, the pioneer in this field. Studying and analyzing Tagore, the author serially lays down the methods of creating music. Citing examples from the notes of a Scottish folksong and a song of Tagore, he compares the changes. In the case one finds it difficult to understand, he gives a method of his own which he feels, if practiced might prove to be effective. He also discusses the application of the method to a song. Thus he shows how the pitch of a song can be changed applying prosody and rhythm. In spite of the use of musical notations, music is intangible and still largely dependent on the masters and tradition.
