Recitation is a performing art that locates itself in the transitional zone between the poet and his audience. It is a complimentary art that flourishes in the third layer of the poetic world after conceiving the ideas and putting them forth on paper by the poet. It functions on the imputed space of expression where the vocal performance structures the nascent potentials of the scripted language of poetry. Recitation “de-scribes” poetry to enter the spirit of poetry and re-present it in front – uplift it from the pages through the active participation of the facial organs. The act of recitation itself is thus a difficult art in itself since the artist here gets only one chance to pass on the spirit of the poem to the audience. Hence they generally prefer the folk and the political/ideological more to the personal as well as experimental poetry since these earlier poems have the added advantage of a surface structure of feeling to appeal/communicate to the mass. The map is now changing as more and more variety is influencing this area of performing art.
